For years, beanies have been limited to a familiar set of decoration methods: embroidery, patches, and woven labels. Clean, classic—but not always flexible.
Now, that’s changing.
Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing is officially making its way onto beanies, unlocking a new way to bring graphics to knitwear. And with it, a whole new design space.
A New Way to Design Beanies
DTG printing allows you to apply graphics directly onto the surface of a beanie—no stitching, no patches, no added layers.
That means:
- More detail
- More flexibility
- More creative freedom
Instead of simplifying artwork to fit embroidery constraints, you can now translate your designs more directly—from screen to product.
Full Graphic Beanies in Trending Streetwear Brands
Recently we’ve seen a shift toward:
- Graphic accessories
- All over prints
- Hand-drawn artwork
- Organic typography
Beanies are no exception.
Rather than treating them as purely functional or minimal, brands are starting to use beanies as another surface for expression—extending graphics beyond tees and hoodies.
DTG makes that possible.
Why Choose DTG?
While embroidery will always have its place, DTG brings a different set of strengths:
- Soft Finish: Because the ink is applied directly to the fabric, there’s no added bulk—no raised stitching or patches.
- Design Translation: What you design is much closer to what you get. No need to adjust for stitch paths or thread limitations.
- Larger Artwork: Less limitation when it comes to artwork sizing and colors, because you don’t have to worry about costly stitch counts.
Understanding the Technical Side
DTG on beanies introduces new creative possibilities—but it also comes with important guidelines to ensure the best results.
Material & Product Requirements
- 100% acrylic knit beanies
- Solid colors only
- Light-colored beanies recommended
Light-colored beanies are key because DTG printing on this product does not use a base layer or pre-treatment, which means printing darker inks on light fabrics works best.
We recommend the Sportsman SP08 in a light color option!
Artwork Placement & Size
Designs are printed in two passes—one for the front and one for the back.
- Max print area (front): 7.9″ W × 4.3″ H
- Max print area (back): 7.9″ W × 4.3″ H
Because of this process, designs are not continuous wraps, but you can create complementary front and back graphics.
Design Considerations for Knit Fabric
Beanies are not flat surfaces, which matters when it comes to design decisions
Best Practices for Design:
- Use bold, high-contrast designs
- Avoid overly delicate details or ultra-thin lines
- Organic or textured artwork pairs well with knit distortion
- Be mindful of how your design will look when slightly stretched
A New Surface to Explore
DTG printing doesn’t replace embroidery, it expands what’s possible.
It gives brands, designers, and creators a new way to approach a familiar product. A beanie is no longer just a finishing touch, it can be a statement piece.
