On this week’s episode of Merch Culture, we sat down with Daniel from BTSA to talk all about the wholesale blanks company that’s making waves in the industry.
A Canvas for Self-Expression
In the world of fashion, standing out from the crowd is essential for any clothing brand aiming to make a lasting impact. One surefire way to achieve this is through the use of custom dyed garments. Unlike mass-produced blank garments that flood the market, custom dyed garments offer a host of advantages that elevate the brand and captivate the attention of fashion-conscious individuals.
By taking control of the dyeing process, clothing brands can create an array of vibrant colors, subtle shades, or even daring gradients that perfectly align with their aesthetic vision. This level of customization sets them apart from the sea of generic blank garments and helps forge a distinctive brand identity that resonates with customers on a deeper level.
Individuality Meets Sustainability
In a world grappling with the environmental impact of fast fashion, brands can take a step towards sustainability by opting for custom dyeing. By dyeing garments in small batches, brands can minimize waste and reduce their carbon footprint.
Not only does BTSA’s custom dye process allow for the creation of unique garments, but it also helps reduce waste. Many blanks companies produce thousands of garments in the particular colors that they offer, often leaving excess inventory when colors don’t sell out. BTSA takes a different approach, where their blanks are dye-to-order, not cut-to-order. Meaning all of the blank PFD silhouettes are already sitting in inventory in all sizes and styles, ready to be custom dyed when an order comes in. This eliminates the excessive waste by allowing the consumer to choose their own color and only dyeing the exact quantities needed.
How does the ordering process work?
In an industry of quick turns, custom garments and dyes may get overlooked for garments that are already waiting in inventory to ship. However, the golden rule of “good things come to those who wait” rings true when you are looking to make an impact and set your brand apart from competitors. You will need to allow a little extra time for the custom dye process, but the result is a completely one-of-a-kind garment perfected to match your vision.
1. Select PFD garment
Select a garment from the catalog of PFD’s that you are interested in.
2. Lab dip is created
The dye team takes your Pantone color and chemically match it to create a dye formula.
3. Lab dip approval
The lab dip swatch is sent to the customer, typically a 2″x2″ square of fabric, to approve the color swatch. This part of the process if free and you can develop as many colors as you want.
This examples shows how your choice of Pantone TCX or TPG code is displayed on the fabric weight of your liking.
4. Sample
If the customer likes the lab dip swatch, they have the option to sample it in 1 or 2 PFD garments before committing to a bulk order. This is a 1-2 week process and entails a sample dye fee.
5. Order
If the customer is satisfied with the samples, they can choose to place a bulk order. BTSA picks the select garments and begins the dye process.
6. Quality Control
Because of the nature of custom dye, every single piece undergoes a quality control check to ensure consistency across the order.
7. Decoration
The dyed garments are shipped out to Culture Studio to be decorated with screen print, embroidery, or any finishing services.
What makes a PFD?
PFD stands for “Prepared for Dye”, which means these garments come blank and ready to be dyed to your custom color. The difference between a PFD and a regular white garment is that PFD’s are specifically made to ensure repeatability and accuracy when it comes to the dye and wash process.
- No optic whiteners added
No chemicals interfere with the dye process.
- Oversize fit
Cut oversize to minimize any shrinkage that may occur in the dye and wash process.
- Sewn with cotton thread
Cotton thread ensures that the stitching dyes the same color as the rest of the garment.
