Tap Into the Stanley Cup Trend & Customize Your Own

What is a Stanley?

Stanley tumblers are reusable steel insulated bottles that keep beverages hot or cold for hours.

The Stanley Brand History

William Stanley Jr. patented the first design for an all-steel vacuum bottle in 1913. Ever since then,  the Stanley brand is known for their heavy duty insulated drinkware, and associated with blue-collar workers and even World War II pilots. But they have recently caught wind on TikTok and seem to have become a Gen-Z phenomenon overnight.

Stanley collaborated with The Buy Guide in 2019 to promote their tumbler line, “Quenchers” to their female following. They quickly gained traction and the brand’s target audience shifted from outdoor enthusiast to Instagram influencer.

Why are people collecting them?

Stanley originally released the tumblers in only 5 colors, but now releases limited-edition colors monthly which raises their collectible appeal. The president of the company has also revealed that they play into the scarcity model by only releasing a certain amount with every drop — once they’re sold out, they’re gone.

Hype & Resale

Quenchers retail for $40-$50 but are currently being listed on StockX for $138-$222.

“This is yet another example of a product that fits that bill for the current culture consumer. The broader cultural shift toward an obsession with hydration also doesn’t hurt—the hashtag #WaterTok has 975 million views on TikTok, and just last week The New York Times predicted premium hydration will be a major trend in 2024,” says Rachel Makar, a senior merchandising director at StockX.

Even though there’s plenty of other insulated tumblers on the market, the Stanley brand tapped into the collectible appeal by creating an exclusivity factor. Just like other hot collectibles throughout history like Beanie Babies or Pokemon Cards, people are lining up outside Starbucks and brawling in Target aisles to get their hands on limited edition collaboration releases.
